00:00:00
Okay, welcome to Comically Exposed episode five.

00:00:12
I'm your host Heather and my co-host is Gabbie.

00:00:16
Nice work, Heather.

00:00:19
Me doing an introduction is a fascinating experience because I'm feeling warm all

00:00:24
of a sudden.

00:00:25
Uh-huh.

00:00:26
But that's okay.

00:00:28
So let's start out the podcast.

00:00:31
So Gabbie.

00:00:32
Yes.

00:00:33
What have you been working on?

00:00:34
Oh my gosh.

00:00:35
Thank you so much for asking.

00:00:36
I can't believe we've waited all this time until we finally got to me.

00:00:40
Well, for the viewers at home who can't see anything because there's no viewing, I have

00:00:46
a post-it in front of me because I put down my things on a post-it because I keep forgetting.

00:00:51
Here we go.

00:00:54
So, well, last time we talked about me applying to this podcast, Late Night Show podcast,

00:01:03
and they got back to me very quickly and they said, no thank you.

00:01:10
They said that we've had a lot of, like an overwhelming amount of people apply.

00:01:15
And so, you know, at this time, I don't remember, but I was kind of like, I had a lot of thoughts,

00:01:24
like one, good, because I kind of didn't think it was a good podcast, and two, how

00:01:31
dare they, because it wasn't a good podcast and they should be so lucky as to have me

00:01:37
on their staff.

00:01:39
And then three was the like, oh, those are two conflicting thoughts.

00:01:44
Cool.

00:01:46
So that's what happened with that podcast.

00:01:49
The one thing that I did manage to do, I applied to Mortified.

00:01:54
Oh, yay.

00:01:55
Yay.

00:01:56
And I fully used your advice, which was just do it, although I think you put it much more

00:02:02
nicely than that.

00:02:03
I think I said baby steps.

00:02:05
Yes, you definitely did say baby steps.

00:02:07
You also encouraged me to actually find the written standup in the house and then apply.

00:02:14
And it turned out that my OCD had come up with a bunch of different steps that I needed

00:02:21
to accomplish on the application that the application did not say to do.

00:02:28
For instance, I took photos of this standup that I wrote in a spiral notebook back when

00:02:35
I was 16.

00:02:36
I spent time editing said photos and upping the contrast and making it sharper so it was

00:02:42
easier to read.

00:02:44
Then I typed up everything that was on the stupid photos anyway, so that I could not

00:02:51
only submit the photos, I'd also have a PDF and you know, this would all be great.

00:02:57
The application asked for a few excerpts.

00:03:02
And you provided all of it.

00:03:04
There was no place to upload any of the rest of it.

00:03:08
Ah, yes.

00:03:10
So I had come up with the idea that they need to see original documents and then a typed

00:03:15
version.

00:03:16
And if you're asking yourself, did it also take you time, Gabbie, to take the photos from

00:03:25
your phone, get them onto the computer, then realize you needed to edit said photos, go

00:03:30
back to your phone, edit on the phone.

00:03:32
And then yes, it did.

00:03:33
It took like an hour out of my life of just spinning my wheels, which I think is so typical

00:03:40
OCD.

00:03:41
It's just a fucking time waster, but very cool.

00:03:45
I applied.

00:03:46
I didn't, I didn't put in any of the emails.

00:03:49
I didn't tell them about any of the emails from my freshman year of college.

00:03:52
So they're going to get back to me and say either like, this is bullshit or hey buddy,

00:03:59
we need more stuff.

00:04:00
And that is out of my control, then my OCD was trying to control it.

00:04:08
Also there was a little bit of judgment I heard there.

00:04:11
No, no.

00:04:13
Yeah.

00:04:16
Where did you hear the judgment?

00:04:21
All throughout it was weaved in interweaved into the whole thing, but I'm glad you did

00:04:27
it.

00:04:28
Thank you.

00:04:29
I'm glad I was your judge.

00:04:30
I mean, I could.

00:04:31
I believe you, but then I would have to judge your judge of my judge.

00:04:36
And then all day.

00:04:37
And then it's going to be a whole thing.

00:04:39
Yeah, honestly.

00:04:40
Yeah.

00:04:41
And then judge, judge, judge, judge, judge, judge, judge, judge.

00:04:45
A couple of things for the listener.

00:04:47
One, we are recording at a totally different time.

00:04:50
We're recording at night.

00:04:51
And for some reason that means that you and I are both way more awake than we normally

00:04:56
are.

00:04:58
And the second thing is I'd like to get into the stuff that I didn't do, but I'd also like

00:05:04
to say, I think this podcast, this episode has a theme and that theme is self-compassion.

00:05:10
Yes.

00:05:11
I totally agree.

00:05:13
Cause that's the one element that, you know, at first when you hear about self-compassion,

00:05:19
you think, oh, that's kind of hokey.

00:05:20
That does nothing.

00:05:21
But in reality, especially with OCD, and I'm sure with many other disorders, you just have

00:05:25
to have a bit of self-compassion for yourself to help you get through, you know, a loop

00:05:31
or a cycle of OCD.

00:05:33
Because when you're in the thick of it, which I recently was, is that self-compassion, you

00:05:39
know, being reminded of doing that practice is difficult when you're in the thick of it.

00:05:45
When you're in, when you're looping and you're being judgmental and, you know, after your

00:05:50
intrusive thoughts and then you catch yourself doing like a compulsion and then another compulsion

00:05:56
and then another compulsion.

00:05:57
Cause you're like ping ponging all over the place and it is very late at night.

00:06:02
You know, I was actually reminded very early this morning when I watched Ted Lasso for

00:06:08
the millionth time in the third season with Sam and his father and his father spoke to

00:06:15
him with such compassion that it made me realize I'm like, how do I teach myself how to be

00:06:23
more compassionate to myself?

00:06:25
Oh yeah.

00:06:26
And say fuck it to the things that, you know, I can't control and pursue the things that

00:06:32
I want to do.

00:06:33
Because that's the thing that OCD does is it robs you from the things that you want

00:06:38
to do.

00:06:39
Yeah.

00:06:40
Because you just have all those doubts in your mind, you know, that go with those intrusive

00:06:43
thoughts and it just builds and builds and builds.

00:06:47
And that's, you know, I don't want to use so many metaphors, but that's becomes the

00:06:51
prison that we end up living in, you know, self-imposed.

00:06:57
Well yeah, self-imposed, but-

00:07:00
From a disorder.

00:07:01
Yeah, that's what I was going to say.

00:07:03
I was like, it sounds like we're trying to say that we have control over the OCD, which

00:07:08
if that was the case, then we wouldn't have OCD.

00:07:12
Because we hear it too, right?

00:07:13
It's like, you just have to do that, you know, do that one thing, you know, it's like, just

00:07:18
do it.

00:07:19
And it's like-

00:07:20
Yeah, exactly.

00:07:22
And it's really hard to explain, you know.

00:07:29
Unless you're talking to a fellow OCD person who just gets it.

00:07:33
I know.

00:07:34
And then you feel acceptance.

00:07:36
Exactly.

00:07:37
But yeah, it's like, you know, you do a compulsion so that you can get rid of the anxiety at

00:07:44
least for a second so you can have a little bit of breathing room.

00:07:47
But then, at least for me, I'll do a compulsion and then I'll immediately have all this self-judgment

00:07:53
and beating myself up for giving into a compulsion.

00:07:56
And then it's just like, ooh, this is a self-perpetuating joy ride.

00:08:02
Yeah.

00:08:03
It's a real bummer.

00:08:05
It's fun.

00:08:06
Once again, we are still selling OCD on our website.

00:08:12
It's discounted if you call today.

00:08:14
Instead of $19.99, it's $19.93.

00:08:18
I don't know.

00:08:20
Anyway, we'll cut that.

00:08:23
Okay.

00:08:24
Yeah, so self-compulsion.

00:08:27
Self-compulsion.

00:08:28
Oh, boy.

00:08:30
Self-compassion.

00:08:33
It's so tough because it also requires, at least for me, it requires acknowledging what

00:08:38
is currently happening.

00:08:41
And that feels like losing, right?

00:08:44
Yeah, it can.

00:08:46
I mean, yeah.

00:08:48
But you know, I mean, how do you move yourself forward?

00:08:50
You know, I mean, that's the thing because there's always going to be good and bad.

00:08:54
But the reality is, I mean, at least the way that my therapist talks about it, it's like,

00:08:59
you don't really think of it as good or bad.

00:09:01
It's just stuff.

00:09:02
Exactly.

00:09:03
It's just stuff.

00:09:04
It's just accepting what is.

00:09:06
Yeah.

00:09:07
And yeah, I don't know, because OCD has told me, no, you don't have to accept what is.

00:09:13
You can control what other people are doing, how other people are feeling.

00:09:17
You can take care of everybody.

00:09:19
You know, it's going to be okay as long as you're the one in control.

00:09:23
And then admitting that that's not what's happening.

00:09:29
And then being like, OK, Gabbie, that's OK that you felt that way.

00:09:34
You know?

00:09:35
Yeah.

00:09:36
And living with the uncertainty.

00:09:37
Yeah.

00:09:38
Yeah.

00:09:39
Yeah.

00:09:40
It's kind of bringing tears to my eyes.

00:09:41
So let's move on from it.

00:09:43
The thing that I didn't do this week was I wanted to invite more people to do my Bat

00:09:50
Shit Roommate podcast.

00:09:52
And so I was going to create a graphic and then I was going to post it on social media.

00:09:56
So it's just like, do you have a crazy roommate story?

00:09:59
Like, you know, contact this gal, which is great.

00:10:02
But there's been some stuff in the world recently and we do not have to get into it.

00:10:07
But it has made social media a very painful place, I think, for everybody all around.

00:10:15
It just, you know, it feels like everybody's having these conversations on social media

00:10:21
about world events that aren't really moving anything forward.

00:10:27
Yeah.

00:10:28
Yeah.

00:10:29
It's just causing divides.

00:10:30
Yeah.

00:10:31
And yet I still feel like I'm not doing anything because I haven't posted on social media.

00:10:37
So self-compassion.

00:10:38
Yeah.

00:10:39
I feel the same way.

00:10:40
I mean, yeah, I mean, it's hard to, you know, when you're dealing with your own stuff, too,

00:10:49
on top of that, and then realizing that there's a whole world outside of you, then you feel

00:10:54
like you're being selfish.

00:10:56
Yes.

00:10:57
That you're taking care of yourself.

00:10:59
Yes.

00:11:00
And that's honestly not the truth, you know, and it's like, and that's again where self-compassion

00:11:05
comes into play, right?

00:11:06
Because what somebody chooses to do versus what you choose to do is, you know, are both

00:11:11
right.

00:11:12
I mean, other than, you know, the obvious things.

00:11:15
Yes.

00:11:16
Like murder.

00:11:17
Yeah.

00:11:18
So.

00:11:19
Yeah.

00:11:20
But you know, no, I was going to make a joke.

00:11:22
Can't do it.

00:11:23
Okay.

00:11:24
But, you know, so you said you wanted to create a graphic.

00:11:29
So the graphic is to announce.

00:11:32
Oh, okay.

00:11:33
I see.

00:11:34
You're asking me to fill in the blanks.

00:11:36
Yes.

00:11:37
Great.

00:11:38
Yes.

00:11:39
Yes.

00:11:40
The graphic is to say like, hi, do you have crazy roommate story?

00:11:43
And I kind of want to figure out a better word than crazy.

00:11:46
I mean, speaking as two people with some mentals, but I don't know if that word is still appropriate

00:11:52
anymore.

00:11:53
But yeah, do you have a bad shit roommate story and do you want to come on my podcast

00:12:00
and talk to me about it?

00:12:02
Yeah, that sounds great.

00:12:04
Yeah.

00:12:05
So it just felt.

00:12:06
So it's just like the step for your podcast.

00:12:09
I mean, that's, that is really good.

00:12:11
The thing that has held me back is I've been using Canva and everything that I want to

00:12:16
use on it is behind a paywall.

00:12:19
So then I was like, no problem.

00:12:21
I'll look into just, you know, paying for membership for a little while.

00:12:26
And then other tabs got open on the computer and.

00:12:33
And then you were in a research spiral from there.

00:12:38
Actually no.

00:12:39
It was saved by like, it was more like the other acronym that rolls my life, ADHD.

00:12:45
It was like, oh, but I should check on my bank account.

00:12:49
Oh, and am I paying that bill?

00:12:52
Oh, and did I follow up with that person about tremendous progress and, you know, productivity?

00:13:00
That was the word I was searching for.

00:13:02
Yeah.

00:13:03
I mean, you know, I mean, how you define productivity.

00:13:05
Again.

00:13:06
Yes.

00:13:07
Yeah.

00:13:08
I mean, I was doing so much management.

00:13:09
Damn it.

00:13:10
I was doing so good.

00:13:13
No, but so creating a graphic, you're finding limitations and what you can do.

00:13:18
Yeah.

00:13:19
I mean, I can see how hard that can be when it's not the way you want it to look.

00:13:24
That makes it difficult.

00:13:25
Yeah.

00:13:26
And I, yes, exactly.

00:13:28
I have so many thoughts about it.

00:13:30
I've already like decided on the logo, but then I can't figure out how to do the logo

00:13:34
again.

00:13:35
It's just getting into the weeds.

00:13:37
We can cut this part out, but I can help with that too.

00:13:41
That was exactly where I was headed.

00:13:43
I'm so glad I didn't have to ask.

00:13:48
You can just draw me up something that you're thinking about and I can help you out with

00:13:51
what you're looking for.

00:13:52
Okay.

00:13:53
Cool.

00:13:54
Yeah.

00:13:55
We'll talk about that off pod.

00:13:56
Yeah.

00:13:57
Because we're friends in real life.

00:13:58
Or we can just talk about it the whole time.

00:13:59
Yeah, exactly.

00:14:00
We don't just talk to each other.

00:14:02
Well, we do just talk to each other.

00:14:04
That's true.

00:14:05
We've only met via the screens so far.

00:14:10
Yes.

00:14:11
We're both two dimensional.

00:14:12
I know if I ever see you in 3D, I'll probably start screaming and then never stop.

00:14:19
Where's your mic?

00:14:20
That's right.

00:14:21
What do you mean you have a body?

00:14:24
You're not just a disembodied head.

00:14:26
What?

00:14:27
Why?

00:14:28
Yeah.

00:14:29
So I think those are all of my things.

00:14:31
Yeah, that's great.

00:14:33
Yeah.

00:14:34
So what about you, friend Heather?

00:14:38
I did not write a Post-It note list and it has been...

00:14:44
If I was to remember everything I did, let's see.

00:14:47
I reached out to people in the humor writing world to review the humor piece that I wrote.

00:14:55
Yes.

00:14:56
I got notes and feedback back and actually tomorrow I was planning on doing a rewrite.

00:15:02
So moving on from that, from there I ended up deciding to take a class with teacher that

00:15:09
I have taken classes from.

00:15:11
Luke Byrne, he's excellent in humor writing.

00:15:15
So I'm taking a class with him right now and writing more humor pieces and seeing how it

00:15:20
goes.

00:15:21
I also joined a humor writing writing group.

00:15:25
Dang, dude.

00:15:26
Not that I'm over committing.

00:15:27
I feel like all of a sudden I'm like, am I over committing?

00:15:29
But in reality it happened all very naturally and it feels like the right direction.

00:15:35
And so wanting to do more work and writing consistently is something that I really want

00:15:41
to do.

00:15:42
And then humor writing is a different style of writing.

00:15:45
It's all joke.

00:15:46
It is one big joke and then you heighten the joke and something I've actually gotten from

00:15:52
my notes is my jokes sound like stories.

00:15:56
And I'm like, yes, I love writing stories, but I think it's also good to write something

00:16:01
different to start to see things, which I think for me, I think this is a good direction.

00:16:09
The other thing was, oh, I opened my doubt it script and realized I had written half

00:16:18
of act two, but totally forgot.

00:16:24
So I started, I haven't fully mapped out, but I am starting to outline the end.

00:16:30
And so the intent is this next round, I plan on getting started ending act two and then

00:16:36
maybe starting on act three and then hopefully finishing it.

00:16:40
But I already know the rewrite, but I am trying to refrain from the rewrite because I can

00:16:44
rewrite an intro so well.

00:16:49
I can make the best cold open that anyone's ever read, but then the rest of it, nothing.

00:16:56
So I have to finish it in order to do the rewrite.

00:17:00
And it's not a rule that I'm self-imposing.

00:17:02
Maybe it is a rule.

00:17:03
I don't know.

00:17:04
It feels like the right thing to do as the next step.

00:17:07
Yeah.

00:17:08
Yeah.

00:17:09
And so I was really excited about that, but I've been slightly distracted because I've

00:17:13
been catching us up on our podcast.

00:17:16
I feel like I talk about the podcast in the podcast, within the podcast, on the podcast.

00:17:22
Anyway.

00:17:23
No, but I wanted to catch us up so we're a little bit closer in time sequence.

00:17:29
So it's not like we're talking about the writer's strike again.

00:17:32
Exactly.

00:17:33
I mean, not like anybody's judging us or listening to us in sequence or whatever, but I'm making

00:17:41
this way bigger than it needs to be, but that's where I am.

00:17:44
Well, that is all you, because I've never done anything like that.

00:17:48
Never once.

00:17:50
So, since I already said my goals, I just condensed my goals with what I said I worked

00:17:59
on.

00:18:00
You know what?

00:18:01
Who cares?

00:18:02
Great.

00:18:03
I mean, way to be super efficient.

00:18:04
That's fantastic.

00:18:05
I was just going to congratulate you on one, doing all the humor piece writing, because

00:18:10
I think one of the reasons that we started this podcast is to try a bunch of different

00:18:14
types of comedy stuff.

00:18:17
And so that's awesome.

00:18:19
And then also hilarious that you had already written most of Act Two and had forgotten

00:18:25
about it.

00:18:26
Well, you know how Act Two's go.

00:18:29
It's like there's a lull in time, because it's like the beginning and end.

00:18:35
There's a lot of action happening.

00:18:36
For me, Act Two seems like it kind of moves at a slow snail's pace.

00:18:46
Let's just get to Act Three.

00:18:48
If it could be just Act One and Three, bam.

00:18:51
That's perfect for me.

00:18:52
Maybe that's your rewrite.

00:18:53
All beginnings and ends.

00:18:58
That's it.

00:18:59
No middles.

00:19:00
None.

00:19:01
Maybe one fart joke, but that's it.

00:19:04
Yeah, that's the only middle.

00:19:06
That's it.

00:19:07
That's right.

00:19:08
That's good.

00:19:09
Those are the best sandwiches.

00:19:11
Just bread.

00:19:12
Yeah.

00:19:13
Yeah.

00:19:14
With a fart?

00:19:15
No, okay.

00:19:16
Yeah.

00:19:17
Mixing mom and dad for a sandwich.

00:19:23
That's our next podcast, Fart Sandwich.

00:19:25
We'll figure out the details later, but I think we can sell a million copies.

00:19:31
But Gabbie's going to come up with the graphic.

00:19:34
Yeah, that's right.

00:19:35
It'll be fantastic.

00:19:36
Okay, great.

00:19:39
Excellent segue.

00:19:40
My goals for this coming is the graphic and to actually post it someplace and ask people

00:19:48
to join my podcast.

00:19:54
Here's another thing.

00:19:56
No.

00:19:57
Never mind.

00:19:59
You didn't want to do the table read.

00:20:06
Is that what you're saying?

00:20:07
Is that the one you're trying to ignore?

00:20:08
Yes, that's the one I'm trying to ignore.

00:20:12
I mean, that's the other thing is I know that we talked to our actor friend, Susan, so she

00:20:19
had great suggestions, but it requires me contacting people individually and asking

00:20:26
them to do this thing.

00:20:28
It's the thought of asking anybody.

00:20:31
I talked about this on the last episode.

00:20:33
Let's just...

00:20:34
Yeah.

00:20:35
No, no, no.

00:20:38
It is hard because I've asked people.

00:20:41
Not a filmed recorded table read of my work or other people's work, but I've actually

00:20:47
set up table reads with some people to give feedback.

00:20:53
So they're just reading, providing voices, but then also providing feedback.

00:20:57
But that's not what you're looking for.

00:20:59
You're looking for...

00:21:00
I don't know.

00:21:01
What I heard from what you just said is that you were willing to help me with the graphic

00:21:04
as well as willing to help me set up this table read.

00:21:08
I try, but...

00:21:12
I'm just saying you could do a casting call.

00:21:16
You can throw in it out if you wanted to, or if you know specific people.

00:21:21
I mean, that's the thing is I would reach out to specific people.

00:21:28
Well Susan suggested come up with a date when I want to do it and then ask specific people

00:21:33
if they can even make that date.

00:21:36
And then if they can make that date, then I can say, hey, how do you feel about playing

00:21:40
Nandor or whatever?

00:21:42
Yeah.

00:21:43
Yeah.

00:21:44
I mean, you can come up with a date.

00:21:47
I mean, you have the script written.

00:21:48
Oh yeah.

00:21:49
I forgot that that's the hard part.

00:21:53
Well, I mean, there's lots of hard parts because what you're really...

00:21:58
I think what's really happening is having the work be exposed.

00:22:04
Yeah.

00:22:05
Because it's one thing to do the work, but it's another thing to have the work exposed.

00:22:11
But it's so cozy in this vacuum.

00:22:14
Well, maybe the table read is a two-parter.

00:22:20
Maybe it's like this is us working out the kinks and then this is us doing the formal

00:22:29
recording.

00:22:30
What do you mean by us working out the kinks?

00:22:33
Well, when the actors are doing their parts, they're going to read it cold or warmish.

00:22:40
You may give them the script and then say, this is the read, but you kind of want to

00:22:44
play with their voices because if you're really directing them, you want to make sure that

00:22:47
they're sounding like the part.

00:22:51
Okay.

00:22:52
I like this.

00:22:53
This is good.

00:22:54
I'm taking notes.

00:22:57
Everybody take these notes.

00:22:58
Yes, exactly.

00:22:59
I'm telling you how to do this because I have done it before.

00:23:02
Not really.

00:23:04
Okay.

00:23:05
So graphic and baby steps with table read.

00:23:10
Okay.

00:23:11
That's me.

00:23:12
Yeah.

00:23:13
That sounds so.

00:23:14
Well, I mean, so the next step I was going to say was if you've reached out to people

00:23:20
and you haven't heard back or people just don't have time, then I would just blast it

00:23:26
on social media and say, hey, casting call.

00:23:30
See what else?

00:23:31
What do I need to do?

00:23:32
Yeah.

00:23:33
So I was going to, I'm going to restate it because I don't know if I did it all, but

00:23:38
I was going to write my second draft of my humor piece after my notes from the very generous

00:23:46
people.

00:23:48
I'm also writing a piece for my class, but that's just for my class.

00:23:52
And then I was going to finish my act two and start my act three.

00:23:58
Nice dude.

00:23:59
But refrain from editing because I can go into that so long.

00:24:05
Yep.

00:24:06
Waste so much time.

00:24:07
But you get to waste time just later on.

00:24:10
Yeah.

00:24:11
Well, then when this re-edited, at least I have a whole piece to work with.

00:24:17
Yes.

00:24:18
Rather than.

00:24:19
Getting really bogged down in little teeny tiny details and like working and working

00:24:23
and working and working.

00:24:24
And where my, you know, cold open is sounds really good.

00:24:28
And then the rest of it doesn't sound like it's the same story.

00:24:34
You know, I think that'll be an interesting take.

00:24:37
I don't think many people have tried that where like the first act is coherent.

00:24:41
The second act is just abstract nonsense.

00:24:44
And the third act, you know, picks up where the first one left off.

00:24:48
Yeah.

00:24:49
Yeah.

00:24:50
Cause I like the ending.

00:24:51
Exactly.

00:24:52
I just don't know what, I just don't want to get to the ending.

00:24:55
I just want to be in the ending.

00:24:57
Yes.

00:24:58
Yes.

00:24:59
Okay.

00:25:00
I don't know if you can hear it at home, but Bunny is whining off screen here.

00:25:07
And so I really hope that's not on the podcast.

00:25:12
Okay.

00:25:13
So you've summed up what you're going to do next week.

00:25:16
I've summed up what I'm going to do this next week or two.

00:25:20
And then that's the end of the podcast.

00:25:25
Yes it is.

00:25:29
So we'll see you in two weeks.

00:25:32
Yes.

00:25:33
And with six.

00:25:35
Oh yeah.

00:25:36
Episode six.

00:25:37
So exciting.

00:25:38
We made it.

00:25:39
We did it.
